I'll never forget the night I sat there scrolling instead of putting my phone down.
My sister had posted a video of her son, eighteen months old, naming eleven animals in a row while she filmed and laughed in the background. I watched it four times. Then I looked over at my daughter, same age, stacking blocks and babbling to herself, and I realized I couldn't actually list four real words she says on her own.
Not "sounds." Not "close enough." Actual, clear words.
This wasn't supposed to be the thing that got to me. I'd read all the "every child develops at their own pace" posts. I'd nodded along to every reassurance from the pediatrician at her last checkup. But there's a difference between reading that in a parenting article and feeling it, at 11pm, watching someone else's toddler perform in a fifteen-second clip.
I felt a little sick about it, honestly. If she wasn't behind, why did it feel like she was?
